Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. (Psalm 88)
Jesus is teaching his disciples as their divine Lord, and such teachings are absolute truths with universal application. He teaches us that he has precedence over all our human preferences.
Not that we are to love our family any less, but that love for him enhances all our other loves because, being God, He is the source of all love.
This is our Christian vocation: loving and following the person of Jesus Christ and finding our identity in him. If Jesus Christ is the fixed point in our compass, all our choices follow a God-ward direction. Then, the Sacraments, the Church, our Lady, the Pope, Christian ethics, the Commandments all slot into place, and all become manifestations of one consistent, superabundant outpouring LOVE.
