Lord, you will show us the path of life. (Psalm 15)
There is so much to reflect upon in the Emmaus story, it is difficult to know where to begin.
The disciples go on a journey in a state of deep despair, their lives have been shattered by Jesus’ brutal death, a leader and prophet who had given them hope for the liberation of Israel. His deliverance by the chief priests and leaders into the hands of Gentiles to be crucified surpassed tragic on so many levels.
Most of us can identify with the disciples in this state of mind: disappointment, betrayal, confusion, despair. We cry out in agony: “God, where are you?”
Jesus answers us before the words have escaped our lips: “You foolish ones! So slow to believe the full message of the prophets!”
Like the disciples, we must spend time in Jesus’s company, reading and absorbing the word of God, where the message of the prophets is to be found, seeking him in prayer and -especially – recognising him in the breaking of bread.
“Behold, I am with you always.”
