Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord! (Psalm 118)
In this Gospel, Jesus tells us very definitely what makes a law good before God: the intention of the heart and mind.
God’s law of love always seeks the ultimate good of the other person, and his followers are commanded to emulate that goal, without exception.
The purpose of the Old Testament Law had become obscured in mere outward fulfilment and legalism. Jesus came to restore its original meaning, which was the well being and flourishing of God’s people.
God is love and all His ways are loving. We have to remember this through all the ups and downs of life, through failure and bitter disappointment.
Jesus lived his life on earth in loving obedience to the Father’s will. This truth will set us free to rise above sadness and disappointment, and “keep on keeping on” being the loving people God wants us to be.
