He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord. (Psalm 14).
We finished last week’s gospel with a call to action: “Go and do likewise.” Today’s gospel gives us another view of Christian life as Christ bids us to be still, silent and to listen to His words.
Contradictory as these commands may seem, both are essential to living a full Christian life.
Martha’s necessary hospitality requires energy, planning, cooking, serving and cleaning to honour and welcome her guests; Jesus would have appreciated that. Mary, on the other hand sat and listened to their special guest.
The lesson for us today is to quieten our distracted minds, turn off our devices, and consciously place ourselves In God’s presence (where we always are anyway) and talk to Him. Such is our faith; our relationship with God who humbles himself to listen to us and asks us to listen to Him.
This is to choose the better part.
