Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me. (Psalm 137).
Today’s Gospel is God’s lifeline to the unhappy, the desperate, the lonely, and all those struggling with adversity in their lives.
It is God’s unbreakable, cast iron promise to help any of us who trust Him and turn to Him in our need.
At a difficult time in my life, I identified myself with the desperate neighbour in this Gospel parable. I persisted in my prayer, daily Mass and rosary for years, never doubting God’s word and holding Him to this promise. There were times when I considered Him very slow to act (and I told Him so!), but I never doubted His word or His love. Finally, my prayers were answered in ways much better than I could have imagined; slow moving glaciers turned into a tsunami of small miracles.
Let no one doubt the power or truth of this Gospel. We are, each of us, held firmly in His loving embrace , with His eyes fixed upon us as on an only child.
God is wonderful indeed.
