Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. (Psalm 32)
Today’s Gospel gives us Matthew’s account of Christ’s Transfiguration.
While this marvellous event is rich with meaning and significance, the Church fathers concur on one meaning in particular. As events of the Passion and Crucifixion of Jesus transpired, this manifestation of Christ’s divinity – His easy converse with Moses and Elijah – the cloud of glory (the Shekinah) from which His Father spoke: “This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him” provided a means of consolation and strength in the hour of pain and terror.
Christ’s Transfiguration has the same message for us today. The Lord wants us to look beyond our present trials and seemingly unanswered prayers to His great loving plan of salvation. He hears our cry, He suffers with us and He will lead us to glory. Trust Him.
