Happy the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. (Psalm 32)
Luke’s Gospel today begins warm and reassuring, and Jesus calls us endearingly, “little flock.” As his teaching progresses – and Jesus, being the master psychologist he is – his lessons become more serious, more profound and, then, very stern.
The lesson is that we have a Lord and Master whom we must serve and obey. We are servants, albeit servants who are dearly loved by the God who is Love itself.
Do we, mere mortals, a fallen race, realise how blessed we are? Do we appreciate what God has given us?
Living a totally unreflective and ungodly life will result in spiritual ruin. On the other hand, God’s mercy abounds and gratefulness is the heart of prayer.
