The just man is a light in darkness to the upright. (Psalm 111)
Today’s Gospel gives us the privilege of listening to Jesus teaching his disciples. He begins very positively: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world…”
Then, Jesus’ penetrating gaze rests on each one of us who, down through the ages, wish to be his disciples. He teaches us that discipleship moves beyond wishing and hoping into actual being and doing.
With his grace, we move out of our natural limitations into the world of action, decisions, performance, and achievement. We must be good people and do good works, all with Jesus in mind, so that praise will be given to our Father in heaven.
