Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. (Psalm 128)
Today’s Gospel reminds us that, even when we think things are going well in our lives, the unexpected can happen – and we must put our trust in God.
While probably astounded by the visit of the three magi, Mary and Joseph were settling in to the task of raising their son. Then, the angel instructs Joseph that this little family must flee to Egypt, because King Herod plans to kill him – and so many other innocents.
Joseph trusted in this message – as had Mary when the angel came to her announcing Jesus’ birth. And, once it was again safe, Joseph returned with his wife and son from exile, settling in Nazareth.
It’s never easy to be uprooted from all that is familiar, but faith makes it possible to believe that the journey brings us closer to God.
