The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him. (Psalm 33)
The recent election of Pope Leo XIV brought to light the immense age and continuity of the papacy. It has endured for over two thousand years in an unbroken line, surviving wars, revolutions, good popes, bad popes, saints and sinners. Such a history can only be by the grace of God.
Jesus appointed Peter as the rock on which he would build his Church, promising that the gates of the underworld could never hold out against it.
In the election of Pope Leo, I felt a surge of joy that the Lord was still with his Church and standing on his promises.
Saints Peter and Paul, pray for us.
