I rejoiced when I heard them say:
let us go to the house of the Lord. (Psalm 121)
Luke gives us a harrowing description of Jesus on the cross, beginning with: “The people stayed there watching Jesus. As for the leaders, they jeered at him.”
These are sentences to melt the most hardened heart. Then, the insults grow worse while Jesus’ mercy and forgiveness increase. He consummates his dreadful destiny in loving obedience to his Father’s will.
This is the price of our salvation.
This is why we love our crucifixes. We look at them and say: You did it for me.
