If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. (Psalm 94)
The contentious question of riches is the subject of today’s Gospel. Riches are not an evil, per se. How we live with them and the values we hold determine which way the scale tips in answer to that question.
Are we grateful to God for sparing us the evil of poverty? Do we live responsibly? Are we generous in almsgiving? Do we respect the poor? Are we fully aware that we will have to answer to God for the gifts he has given us?
The Lord has given us a formula to live by which will steer us through the false security of wealth and the misery of poverty: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Mt. 6:33)
