God mounts his throne to shouts of joy; a blare of trumpets for the Lord. (Psalm 46)
The Ascension of the Lord is another milestone in the history of our salvation.
In the past months we have celebrated Jesus’ birth, passion, death, resurrection, and now, with his ascension into heaven, his physical presence leaves us.
The departure of a loved one is always tinged with sadness, unless it promises a much greater good. Jesus’ ascension is this kind of departure. Before leaving his disciples, Jesus promises them – and us – that He loves us, will stay with us, and shares with us the greatest gift: the Holy Spirit.
This coming week is one the Church longs for with ardent anticipation; we pray and await the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit.
