Do not forget the works of the Lord (Psalm 77)
The New Testament is concealed in the Old and the Old Testament is revealed in the New.
We see this fact well illustrated in today’s readings for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
Moses is leading a fractious, rebellious people through the desert, whom God punishes by sending fiery serpents. The antidote God sends is for Moses to fashion a raised standard entwined by a bronze serpent. By looking upon this mysterious symbol, the sick person will be healed.
This sign prefigures the crucified Christ, dying to redeem sinful humanity. When we look upon a crucifix with love and devotion and realise Christ’s redeeming sacrifice, we must go a bit further, looking deep inside ourselves, then confess: He did it for me.
