On Thursday, June 25, the Benedictines of the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception at Kylemore Abbey were pleased and grateful to receive an icon of the Synaxis of the Holy Apostles, written by artist Susan Kelly von Medicus. The icon was created in egg tempera, mineral pigments and 23K gold leaf.
Susan is a professor at Villanova University outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Her specialty is iconography in the tradition of the Prosopon School. Susan is also a niece of the late Princess Grace of Monaco. Together with The Poleberry Foundation, Susan donated the icon, the presentation facilitated by the moanstery’s good friend, Martin Dunphy.
Father Tony King blessed the icon during the mid-day Mass in the monastery chapel, with more than a dozen members of the Kelly family in attendance. The icon will be given a prominent place in the monastery, where it will serve to inspire prayer, reflection and devotion.
