Gospel Reflection for the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the sight of angels

I will sing your praises, Lord (Psalm 137).

Luke describes the call of Peter, James and John in vivid detail: the crowds pressing about Jesus as he instructs them on the shores of Lake Gennesaret. We can fill in the details; blue sky, sea birds, sunshine, lapping water  and three fishermen mending their nets. From the brief encounter which follows between Jesus and the fishermen their lives, our lives and the world is being changed.

God is at work forging salvation history made by Jesus, passed down through the ages by those fishermen and their successors. We are the beneficiaries who live by His merits, His gracious gifts and His love.

Lord Jesus Christ, when you call me help me to follow.
